Will air cleaners reduce health risks?
Air cleaners can help reduce the health effects of certain airborne particles, such as dust and light spray mists, by removing small solid or liquid substances suspended in the air. Under optimal conditions, some air cleaners are effective at removing respirable-size particles, like those from tobacco smoke, which are of
What is a MERV rating?
The Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating measures a filter’s effectiveness at capturing particles ranging from 0.3 to 10 microns in size. Developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), this rating system helps you compare the performance of different filters. The MERV scale ranges
What is a HEPA filter?
A HEPA filter, which stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air filter, is a highly effective type of air filter designed to capture airborne particles. Officially defined by the U.S. Department of Energy, a true HEPA filter can remove at least 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns in diameter.

Will air cleaners reduce health risks?
Air cleaners can help reduce the health effects of certain airborne particles, such as dust and light spray mists, by removing small solid or liquid substances suspended in the air. Under optimal conditions, some air cleaners are effective at removing respirable-size particles, like those from tobacco smoke, which are of particular concern because they can be inhaled deeply into the lungs. Reducing these particles can alleviate health issues ranging from eye and lung irritation to more severe conditions like cancer and decreased lung function.
However, there is some debate about the ability of air cleaners to mitigate allergic reactions caused by larger particles, such as pollen, house dust allergens, molds, and animal dander. These larger particles typically settle on surfaces in the home rather than remaining airborne, so they are not removed by air cleaners unless they are disturbed and re-suspended in the air.
Air cleaners without specialized media, such as activated carbon or alumina, do not remove gaseous pollutants, including radon, or mitigate their associated health effects. The effectiveness of air cleaners with these media in reducing health risks from gaseous pollutants and radon progeny (decay products) remains uncertain and is not fully assessed at this time. Health effects from these pollutants can be serious, and their impact on indoor air quality is a significant concern.
This size represents the “most penetrating particle size” (MPPS), meaning it is the hardest size for the filter to capture. However, HEPA filters actually trap particles both larger and smaller than 0.3 microns with even greater efficiency.
To ensure optimal performance, HEPA filters require regular cleaning and replacement according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.
In addition to HEPA ratings, filters are also evaluated based on their Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV). This scale measures a filter’s effectiveness at capturing particles ranging from 0.3 to 10 microns in size. Developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the MERV rating helps compare the performance of different filters, with higher ratings indicating better particle capture capabilities.
For more information on MERV ratings, visit ASHRAE’s official website.

What is a MERV rating?

Developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), this rating system helps you compare the performance of different filters.
The MERV scale ranges from 1 to 20, with higher numbers indicating a greater ability to trap particles. A higher MERV rating means the filter is better at capturing smaller and more challenging particles, improving air quality more effectively. | High efficiency Particulate Air filter HEPA* | 99.97% of particles in the 0.3-micron range Particles that are larger or smaller than 0.3 microns are captured with a greater than 99.97% efficiency |
A HEPA filter, which stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air filter, is a type of pleated mechanical air filter defined by the U.S. Department of Energy. It is designed to remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns in diameter. This size represents the “most penetrating particle size” (MPPS), meaning it is the most challenging for the filter to capture. HEPA filters are actually even more effective at trapping particles both larger and smaller than 0.3 microns.
To ensure that your air filter continues to work effectively, it’s important to perform regular maintenance and replace the filter according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
